An estimate only. The shop's bill, with its own rate, is what you pay.

How this rate is worked out

  1. International gold and silver price
  2. Converted to rupees
  3. Plus import duty and a local premium
  4. Rate per gram for Bengaluru

It is an estimate of the market, and it follows international prices while world markets are open. The rate that applies when you buy is the shop's own rate for that day, and GST and making charges are extra. When the family has set the day's rate on the board, the page says "Shop rate" and shows that instead.

World markets are closed at weekends and on market holidays. Then the rate stays at the last price, and the board says so, with the time of that price.

Questions about the gold rate

What is the difference between 22K, 24K and 18K gold?

24K gold (999) is almost pure gold, 99.9 percent. It is soft, so it is mostly used for coins and bars. 22K gold (916) is 91.6 percent gold mixed with other metals for strength, and it is what most traditional Indian jewellery is made in. 18K gold (750) is 75 percent gold, harder again, and is often used for jewellery set with stones.

Why does the gold rate change during the day?

The rate follows the international gold price, which moves whenever world markets are trading, and the value of the rupee against the dollar. Import duty and local demand also feed into what gold costs in India. When world markets are closed, such as at weekends, the rate stays at the last price.

What is not included in the gold rate?

The rate is for the metal only. GST and the making charge are added on top, and so is the price of any stones or other materials in a piece. Ask for the full break-up of weight, rate, making charge and GST before you decide.

How is the price of a gold ornament worked out?

Usually the weight of the ornament in grams multiplied by the day's rate per gram, plus a making charge, plus GST. The estimator on this page does the same sum, so you can try different weights and purities.

Is the rate on this page the rate I will pay?

Not always. When the page says "Market estimate", it is an indicative rate worked out from international prices, and the rate at the shop may differ. When it says "Shop rate", the family has set that rate for today. What applies when you buy is the shop's rate on the day.
