These three words overlap, and shops use them loosely. Here is how we use them, so that you can say what you want.

Temple jewellery

Temple jewellery follows the style of ornaments made for temple deities. Look for Lakshmi or other figures, peacocks, lotus and floral motifs, and red and green stones, often with pearl or bead drops. Common pieces are the long haram, a shorter necklace, a wide choker and large jhumkas.

Antique finish

Antique finish is a surface treatment that gives gold a soft matte look instead of a bright shine. It shows detailed carving well and suits silk sarees. It describes the look, not the age of the piece.

Bridal

Bridal sets are the largest pieces: a long haram with a wide necklace or choker, earrings, and sometimes a maang tikka. If you want a bridal design changed or made, start early and allow time.

Choosing for an occasion

• Wedding. A haram and a choker, or a full set with earrings.
• Varamahalakshmi and festivals. A temple necklace or a Lakshmi pendant on a haram.
• Everyday occasions. A shorter antique necklace or a pair of jhumkas.
