HUID hallmark check: how to verify your gold

Every hallmarked gold piece carries three marks. Here is how to read them, and how to check the HUID yourself on your phone with the official BIS CARE app.

The three marks on a hallmarked piece

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) says hallmarked gold jewellery carries the BIS standard mark, the purity of the gold in carat and fineness, and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID code. Source: PIB.

  • 1. BIS logo

The BIS standard mark, the triangle logo of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

  • 2. Purity grade

The carat and fineness together, such as 22K916 or 18K750.

  • 3. HUID

A 6-character code of letters and numbers, unique to this piece.

The marks are tiny. Use the zoom on your phone camera or a magnifying glass to read them. The Government of India announced that hallmarked gold jewellery sold without a HUID would not be permitted after 31 March 2023. PIB

Verify the HUID in five steps

You need a smartphone and the piece in your hand.

  1. Find the HUID on the piece

It is printed next to the BIS logo and the purity grade. Read the 6 characters carefully; letters and numbers can look alike at that size.

  2. Install the BIS CARE app

Get it from Google Play or the App Store, and check that the publisher is the Bureau of Indian Standards.

  3. Open "Verify HUID"

It is one of the options in the app. Follow the prompts the app shows.

  4. Enter the HUID

Type the 6-character code from the piece.

  5. Compare with your bill

BIS says the app gives you the jeweller's registration number and details of the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre that hallmarked the piece. Check that they make sense against your invoice, and ask the jeweller if anything does not.

If you still have doubts

A hallmarked piece can be tested at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (a testing fee applies), and complaints can be made through the BIS CARE app or the BIS website. Check the current details on the BIS pages below.
