Choosing and caring for silver pooja items

Silver is the usual metal for pooja vessels and lamps, and it is a common gift for housewarmings, weddings and naming ceremonies. The photos above show the kinds of things people ask us for: tall deepas, kumkum boxes and bharani, plates, bowls on a tray, bells, idols and Varamahalakshmi faces.

Choosing

  • Lamps. Check that the base is steady and the oil cup is deep enough for the wick you use.
  • Kumkum boxes and bowls. Look for a lid that fits well, and a surface that is easy to wipe.
  • Plates and sets. Decide what the set must hold, then choose the size.
  • Idols. Ask about weight and base, since a heavier piece is more expensive and a lighter one more delicate.

Weight and purity

Silver is sold by weight at the day's rate, so a heavier piece costs more. Ask us about the purity of the piece you are choosing and have it noted on the bill, along with the weight, rate and making charge.

Caring for silver

  • Silver turns darker over time. This is normal and it can be cleaned.
  • Wipe after each use with a soft, dry cotton cloth, and clean off oil and kumkum soon after the pooja.
  • For a deeper clean, wash gently in warm water with a little mild soap, then dry fully.
  • Do not use harsh scrubbers on engraved or oxidised pieces, because they wear the pattern.
  • Store in a soft cloth or a sealed pouch, away from damp, perfume and rubber.

Questions people ask

How is silver priced?

Silver is sold by weight at the day's rate, so the price depends on how heavy the piece is. Ask us for the break-up before you decide.

Which pooja items can I ask for?

Lamps and deepas, kumkum boxes, plates and sets, kalasha, Varamahalakshmi items, idols, glasses and gift articles. If you do not see an item here, ask us on WhatsApp.

How do I check the purity of silver?

Ask us about the purity of the piece you are looking at and have it written on the bill. Silver is sold by weight, so purity matters to the value.

Do you have silver for Varamahalakshmi?
